Scripture<\/h3>\n

Matthew 26:47-56:<\/strong> While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: \u201cThe one I kiss is the man; arrest him.\u201d Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, \u201cGreetings, Rabbi!\u201d and kissed him.<\/p>\n

Jesus replied, \u201cDo what you came for, friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. With that, one of Jesus\u2019 companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.<\/p>\n

\u201cPut your sword back in its place,\u201d Jesus said to him, \u201cfor all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?\u201d<\/p>\n

In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, \u201cAm I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.\u201d Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.<\/p>\n

Reflect<\/h3>\n

Think about how Jesus must have felt, having had compassion on so many and having healed so many of their infirmities, only to be met with angry, cursing people who intended to repay his goodness with harm. A betrayal from a trusted friend became an additional torment.<\/p>\n

Prayer<\/h3>\n

Lord Jesus, so many times have I abandoned your teachings in favor of expediency. I have left behind all that you taught so many times and have neglected to love others as you have loved me. Forgive me and bless me with your strength.<\/em><\/p>\n
